I need suggestions for:

1) Most romantic poem or novel one might study at highschool?

2) A love song you like. Ideally not a very well known one? Maybe including something about pining, or unrequited/hidden love?

Any thoughts?

Thanks. <3

How Do I Love Thee? (Sonnet 43) by Elizabeth Barrett Browning

I am excited by this question!

YES. Great call. I love that one.

(P.S. For the delightfully mod-ed [livejournal.com profile] hs_merlin, of course ;)

Romeo and Juliet, but I may be a tad morbid, plus I remember the movie (Len Whiting and Olivia Hussey, not that other modern version).

Love song? There's a new Kenny Chesney one called Somewhere with You which is about being out with a new love and all you can think of is being somewhere with the old one:

If you're going out with someone new
I'm going out with someone too
I won't feel sorry for me, I'm getting drunk
But I'd much rather be somewhere with you

Laughing loud on a carnival ride, yeah
Driving around on a Saturday night
You made fun of me for singing my song
Got a hotel room just to turn you on

You said pick me up at three a.m.
You're fighting with your mom again
And I'd go, I'd go, I'd go somewhere with you

I won't sit outside your house
And wait for the lights to go out
Call up an ex to rescue me, climb in their bed
When I'd much rather sleep somewhere with you

Like we did on the beach last summer
When the rain came down and we took cover
Down in your car, out by the pier
You laid me down, whispered in my ear

I hate my life, hold on to me
Ah, if you ever decide to leave
Then I'll go, I'll go, I'll go

I can go out every night of the week
Can go home with anybody I meet
But it's just a temporary high 'cause when I close my eyes
I'm somewhere with you, somewhere with you

If you see me out on the town
And it looks like I'm burning it down
You won't ask and I won't say
But in my heart I'm always somewhere with you

I can go out every night of the week
Can go home with anybody I meet
But it's just a temporary high 'cause when I close my eyes
I'm somewhere with you, somewhere with you

Somewhere with you
I'm somewhere with you
I'm somewhere with you
Somewhere with you
Somewhere with you

Well, if it's a love song for an angsty teenager with a crush, I can guarantee that Radiohead's Creep strikes a chord with that crowd. And by that crowd I mean me 8 years ago.

1. Giaur, George Byron,
2. It's hard to pick out one. I'd say Without You I'm Nothing, Placebo.

Thanks for the tips! I don't know the Byron, I'll check it out - and Placebo's an excellent idea. Thanks! :D

1) The Planter's Daughter by Austin Clarke.

"When night stirred at sea,
And the fire brought a crowd in
They say that her beauty
Was music in mouth
And few in the candlelight
Thought her too proud,
For the house of the planter
Is known by the trees.

Men that had seen her
Drank deep and were silent,
The women were speaking
Wherever she went --
As a bell that is rung
Or a wonder told shyly
And O she was the Sunday
In every week."

1) Pablo Neruda's 20th Poem, from Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair. For 2, I have only things in Spanish, so I'm thinking you won't have much use for them.

Thank you! I'll definitely check it out Neruda :D

Alas, Spanish is above my skill set D:
