EDIT: All I seem to do is rec these days, but OTOH I'm really not keeping this post up. I'll leave it here; basically it has old SPN recs up to May 2009 and my BEST FIC in each fandom I've ever read at the bottom, but for things post May 2009 you'll need to use tags.

Short fic recs. After the rigors of big bang, here are some little gems of delight that really worked for me.

Summary: Sam's sick, and it's all his fault.
Desperately cute flashfic. Dean just loves Sammy which I adore, but keeps the edge of tension inherent in a young child having such responsibility.

Stanford Kaleidoscope by halfshellvenus.
Information: PG-13
Warnings: None
Summary: Three overlapping scenes dating from Sam's departure for college.
halfshellvenus is a queen of putting infinite meaning in very few words. This is no exception.

Wincest

Gather me in a rainstorm by dreamlittleyo.

Warnings: None
Summary: Sam saves Dean. The problem is neither of them remembers it. Some things aren't the disasters they should be, and others can wait until later. Bobby helps as much as he can.

Warnings: None
Summary: It's all fun and games until you're name-checked on a Fall Out Boy record.
All dialogue fics are a real skill, and this is expertly done and delightfully subtle. Read it.

Scrubs AU by thehighwaywoman.
Information: J2, various lengths, NC17
Warnings: None
Summary: Jared's a harried, hassled, frazzled, frustrated resident at Saint Francis of Immaculate Mercy General. Jensen's a cranky, bristly, snarky attending physician in serious denial.
This is a cheat, of course, because while the first fic is less than 3,000 words, it’s a ‘verse now. Alas, I cannot keep to my own rules. I also cannot recommend highly enough. Well characterized and funny.

Information: 2,696 words, PG, implied wincest only – I couldn’t in good conscience file this under gen, but it actually is.

Summary: The boys lose their memory.
“Hmmm,” Dean continues with a grin. “Easily adaptable to a change of name. I’m still going with hooker.”

Under Hill by astolat.
Information: 10,120 words, explicit, wincest
Warnings: None
Summary: "Can't we just kill a bunch of elves without having to talk about our feelings?" Dean said.
The above gave me a taste for amnesia fic, so I reread this. It’s a classic. Hot and hilarious with her normal excellent dialogue.

Dioscouri by monstor_of_hope.
Information: First-time stand-alone. Word count 7,985.
Warnings: None
Summary: Someone slips Dean a love potion. Sam distracts him with romantic comedies. Less cracktastic than it sounds.
Sweetly hilarious fic with drugged Dean, and then drugged Sam. Now, Sam. You should have seen that coming.

Summary: Sam's an observant brother, isn't he? Dean keeps telling him everything's fine but something's not quite right.
I adore fics that deal with Dean’s epic love of Sam, which is basically another character in the show for me (Supernatural cast list: Sam Winchester, Dean Winchester, 1969 Chevy Impala, Dean’s Love For Sam), but I love even more fics that deal with Sam’s quieter (at least until this season), but no less strong, love for Dean. Ahh.

Summary: A cold snap, a star struck rat, and a clueless Jensen.
Jensen has some trouble understanding the reality of his situation, but everyone else is just fine. Jared, in particular, is completely untroubled. Humorous and sweet.

The Ultimate Gay Test, or whether or not to lick Jensen Ackles by felisblanco.
Information: Over 20,000 words with sequels, NC17, J2
Warnings: None given by author; some use of sex toys.
Summary: It's not as if Jared's gay. He thinks. It's just that Jensen's so goddamn pretty.
While I think we all know how we would personally answer the subtitle quandary (Yes, I'll lick him! Restraining orders be damned!) it’s more complicated than that for Jared. In sequels he formulates a plan of penetration. It’s good to approach these things logically, Jared. Attaboy. Funny and extremely hot.

You OK? by jessie_s_girl. PG-13, Summary: "Dad, that's the way it works." Sam sounded like he was talking to a child...well, someone younger than him anyway. "We watch each other's backs.", lovely pre-series look at the boys.

On Duty by weesta. PG. Summary: The Winchesters spend a rare day off. Wee!Winchesters, lovely look at young boys with John. Some good sequels, too.

Seek by indysaur. Summary: Endings are hard. Beginnings are harder. Supernatural wraps up and Jared and Jensen approach the next year in radically different fashion. Favourite J2 I've read in a long time.

Coast on through by philalethia. NC17, S/D, A post-first-time fic. With a lot of sex. And it’s lovely.

Dean Winchester and his incredible shrinking penis by bitter_crimson. NC17, S/D, genderfuck. Yes I know the title’s off-putting, but it’s funny.

The World's a small child in the dark by stele3. NC17. Sometimes I don't rec fics because I know everyone with the slightest interest in the fandom would have already read it, but, you know what? I'm going to rec this anyway, because I think it may actually be my favourite Sam/Dean. Spoilers for AHBL2 written before the start of season 3 - it's a dealing with the deal fic. Hurrah.

Erm. John/Sam

Thump (NC17) and Replacement (R). Fantastic couple of fics in a pairing I rarely read, but they're really excellent by disanddat. Daddycest, obviously, so think before you click, but really very good. A look into John's head in a realistic way, which is, I think, rather rare in daddycest.

J2

I'm really enjoying the rather silly, but very funny chubby Jensen kink that's been going on recently, and A Surfeit of Tarts by memphis86 and the older Jensen Ackles: Bigger Boned by minjmeraar are both funny, touching and adorable (and NC17).

The Desperate Kingdom by vaingirlfic. NC17. Part of her outside by the blue, blue moon verse. This fic isn't S/D and has Sam/OMC and a (rather sweet) OMC point of view. The overall verse is S/D and S/OMCs, noncon, dubious con, and kinks. But. Is brilliant. Sam makes a sacrifice for his family with long-lasting consequences.

Multi-media rec! Paint the Winchesters by aislinn_tredor. Absolutely hilarious. The AHBL2 one is my favourite. This week's makes reference to the season premiere, but is only spoilery if you don't know what the episode title is and what it stands for.

Gods and Monsters by silverkit_fic Gen, G. Short and through an OC's eyes. A little girl finds a couple of cats. Very cute.

Stir Crazy by halfshellvenus Gen, G. Wee!cester cuteness. I so admire a well written drabble. So much packed into so little.

Sam’s turn (3 part) by minkmix Gen, R/Gender swap. Follows a two part Dean genderswap, with girl!Dean/OFC, but this one’s better. 90pound!Sam is now a kink of mine ;-)






My top one fic ever in each of the fandoms I've ever read:

I've split up Supernatural into wincest and gen, and let myself have two if one of my favourites was pure porn. Which it often was.

And, hell, have to give an honourable mention (again in the gen category) for big_pink’s Red and sequel Dazzleland. And also destina’s Indelible. WTF with all the gen?!
