Stop upsetting me, interweb, you're meant to make me smile not frown.

Also on the down side the majority of [livejournal.com profile] bandombigbang fics are not in pairings I read, which is very disappointing. BUT, one of them is so goddamn awesome anyway it makes up for it. Behind the Sea by [profile] airgiodslv, very loosely based on Seaquest DSV. Ha! And is absolutely wonderful.

And it's nearly [livejournal.com profile] spn_j2_bigbang posting time. \o/\o/\o/\o/ Thank God. I CANNOT WAIT ANY LONGER OR I WILL COMBUST!

Still, it took me about 3 months to read all the fics last time and there are so many more this time I think it will probably take me about six... so I need to get started! Sleep is for wimps. Caffeine is for life.

And so, a rec. I think this was the last big bang fic I read last time because it was sooo long. And then when I DID read it, I was kicking myself there had been months when I could have known this lovely story and did not. Monogatari. J2 samurai. NC17. Wonderful, and possibly my favourite big bang fic from last year.

Really, the samurai one is good? Hmm. I kind of decided against reading it because while I find the samurai culture fascinating, Tom 'look how I completely fail to be credible as any kind of warrior' Cruise popped into my mind for...erh...Western perception of the thing. And yes, I might have spent too much time going over my damn phd thingie. But if you say it's grande, then I'll defintely give it a try. Yup. :D

I agree about the first part and for taste with the second. Unfortunately, caffeine has no effect on me except make me uncomfortable jittery. Still. Good motto. ;D

I know! I left this one to the end because I just didn't fancy it, (and it's extreme length!) but I did really love it. You, with your cultural expertise may be harder to please than I was, though ;-)

Oh, I have no expertise on Japan at all. Or at least just the moment basic one which you get when you're addicted to watching documentaries. ERh.

But yeah. I started reading the first part and backpedaled. Just the 'Jensen' in Japan's highly formal, hierarchal culture? Nah.

*nods* There are things in (even good) fics you just can't get over sometimes.

I've had a problem with it myself, actually. (One of) my j2bigbang fics was a period piece and there names were just WRONG. No way Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles were Confederate soliders in the American Civil War. Gave up ;-) Trying to write in a historical setting went SO BADLY! One of the things I like in fic is snappy, contemporary dialogue and having them speak in formal tones is, again, just sounding wrong. So I sort of ended up with making them speak formally but their thoughts and my descriptions were contemporary. Obviously that didn't work and another fic will never see the light ;-)

I get the difficulty with that seeting. The last names don't seem to fit in, no, and I totally get you about the language.

It does remind me off this incredible SPN gen fic I once read witht he boys investigating something going bump during one of the Civil War re-enactment thingies. Gorgeous.
