So!

After a decade out of fandom, when my daughter turned 10 recently I thought a little bit of self-care wouldn’t go amiss, what would I like to do, and the answer was, read some fanfic!

So I did.

And I enjoyed it. Been doing it for a few months now, enough to confidently say I’m definitely in fandom again, at least as a reader, so I thought I’d try reengaging.

Turns out I still have lj, dw, ao3 and tumblr accounts, although my twitter seems to have been purged…

I’m very aware fandom is no longer on lj or dw, and I’m likely talking to myself here, but if anyone is around and can tell me where fandom actually is these days, outside of ao3 for the fic, (seems to have maybe moved on from tumblr? Is it twitter? WTF is discord?!) that would be marvellous!

If you are around, give me a wave; I’d love to hear what’s been going on with you <3

Anyway, what I’m probs mostly going to do is just rec a lot of stuff, and I’m going to start here with the fics I specifically searched out when I thought, ok, so what shall I reread? It therefore goes without saying these are all at least a decade old! I’ll rec new stuff I’m reading later. Might try and rec on my tumblr as well. Wish me luck…

Toasterverse by Scifigrl47. Marvel, Mature rating, Steve/Tony with minor other pairings. Masses of fics, the case files are in a different series so don’t miss out on them, and a still ongoing series. Fantastic writing makes me laugh every time. This was written very early MCU before Steve/Bucky became the dominant pairing for Steve, and is delicious. Maybe a bit too vulnerable Tony for where the movies went, but ask me if I care. (Hint. I do not.)

Next, Generation Kill, a very small fandom I never really engaged in except to read, but one of those fandoms that had a very high percentage of good fics in it. Small but perfectly formed.

Brad/Nate was my bag, because I adored Stark Sands as Nate - my favourite character - but an outstanding fic I remembered very clearly in Brad/Ray was Take MOPP off as directed by derryderrydown, Explicit, Brad/Ray set in a BDSM verse. Love it - BDSM can be hard to do in character, but she nails it.

The Brad/Nate that most stuck out in my mind was Sixteen Days in September by Tevere, Brad/Nate, unrated but I’d say Mature, AU in peace corps in East Timor. Perfect characterisation.

Ok, so here’s where we get a bit redundant, because my number 1 fic in no less that three fandoms are by the same person; astolat, and it’s completely redundant reccing her (or at least it was ten years ago!), but I’m going to do it anyway, because maybe someone’s managed to miss them and get to read them for the first time. I’d be so jealous…

Anyway the Supernatural fic of my heart is Old Country by astolat, Sam/Dean, Explicit, Winchesters at Hogwarts. Back in the year after Dean makes his deal when Sam is trying to save him, which if you know me at all you will know I never forgave SPN for not letting Sam save Dean. But here we can pretend he did! At Hogwarts! What could be better?! The other fics I looked up by Astolat were Time in a Bottle in Stargate Atlantis (McKay/Shepard, so clever) and That Shall Acheive the Sword and its sequel An Exile in Albion in Merlin (Arthur/Merlin, beautiful. astolat’s Merlin fics are, without exception, amazing. Stupid, noble boys, stupidly in love.)

In due South I looked up Chicago’s most wanted by Sperenza (RayK/Fraser, Explicit, possibly containing my favourite line in fic ever:“Sucking cock and robbing banks. Fraser just hadn't been the same since prison.”) All her dS stuff is great - after this probably About a Dog my next favourite. Or Some Strange Prophecy.

The last two I searched out are definitely soooo much older than 10 years old. Multiple decades we’re talking here, but still brilliant Where the Worms Are by Pamela Rose (Bodie and Doyle, The Professionals, set after Cowley ‘dies’) and Pat Foley's Partners part 1 Partners part 2 (gen, but completely focused on Napoleon and Illya’s relationship over the years. An all time favourite.)

I’ll rec some of the new stuff I’ve dipped my toe into since returning later. Say hi and rec me some good stuff if you can hear me!

I LOVED Scifigrl47's Toaster verse, Chicago's Most Wanted, and Old Country. Great recs. I'll have to check out the rest of your recs. I hadn't read the Professional's fics you've recced before.

It's nice hearing from you again! I'm glad you're having fun rediscovering fan fiction. :)

Yes, I do miss how active LJ used to be and DW is still somewhat active depending on who you follow. New people have joined and others have left...The thing is no other social media platform can really replace how DW functions if you want conversations with people and time to respond.

Have you discovered any new fandoms for you? I still post recs at Pinboard and on my DW but I got sucked into the Untamed fandom so my recent recs are for that fandom.

I have SO MANY Star Wars recs on my Pinboard/Dreamwidth account. Mostly prequel trilogy, some original trilogy and some sequel, plus the Mandalorian and Star Wars Rebels...I also have a lot of DCU recs. :)

You can find "The Untamed" on Netflix, there is a cartoon version which is shorter than the live action show, but if you do get into the live action it's worth it. No lie though, that first 2 to 3 episodes are somewhat confusing and it took me a while to identify characters easily. The show dumps you straight into the action then has a 36 episode flashback where you see what lead up that first scene in episode 1. Great drama/romance, so slashy.

Lovely to hear from you and it's wonderful to think of your daughter practically in second level! Where does the time go?

And WTF is discord? I have no idea.

Thank you for the recs. I love Old Country too, so much.
