Damn, some of these are HARD.

Pitting Jack and Daniel against John and Rodney? Original K/S against reboot K/S? That's just mean!

Why do all my TV shows hate me?

Supernatural is still the wound that will never be healed, dammit *dramatic sigh*, and now Merlin:

Grumpy.

Oh, that's annoying. You wait until a WIP is finished to read it and then, after reading x thousand words, there's a cliffhanger ending and the promise of a sequel.

Teen Wolf

I need to talk about Teen Wolf. I want to enjoy this season like I enjoyed the hell out of last season; as fluffy eye-and-brain candy. Derek Hale is insanely hot, and Stiles is very, very much my type. I can even find love in my heart for Scott, Allison and Lydia. And also Scott's Mon and Stile's Dad and the Coach. (Not Jackson, though. Sorry Jackson.) But...spoilers )

Why must you take away my simple pleasures, TV? Why?

Stuff I've been reading recently in a range of fandoms (I really need to commit to one) that has been AMAZING.

1) Julia Roberts Sits on a Throne of Lies by [livejournal.com profile] smithereen, Hocky RPS, Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane, NC17, whore!fic, WIP, in which Tazer is the worst hooker ever and Kaner sucks at paying for sex. OK, I have never seen these guys play a game of hockey but that doesn't matter, even if you know nothing at all about them, this is brilliant.

FYI, all I know about hockey I learnt from Of Hawks and Hands a F/K 200,000 word fic by [livejournal.com profile] dsudis. If you like slash and haven't read this you have no idea what you've been missing out on. You will forever rue the days weeks months and years in which you had not read this fic. Easily one of my top 20 fics of all time.

2) Team Building Activities by [livejournal.com profile] valtyr, 38,000 words, The Avengers, Steve/Tony, R. The best avengers fic I've read, I think.

3) The Illusion of Life by [livejournal.com profile] toestastegood, Heroes, Mylar, 6,600 words, set in the 5 years gone universe, read the author's warnings. Shona writes in many fandoms very much to my taste, and this is the best Mylar fic I've ever read (I read it years ago, it was written straight after Season One, I think). Brilliant fic, just as good on the re-read.

4) Kings of the Mountain by faviconsloganeer, The Social Network, 12,000 words, Mark/Eduardo, NC17, AU. Nice AU in which the separation never happened and they slowly developed a relationship instead. Lovely, sexy, curtain!fic.

So there are 4 potentially exciting movies for geeks coming out this year.

1) The Avengers: I'm going to see this on Monday. I am excite. Mostly because there is no member of that cast I wouldn't bang like a screen door in a hurricane, but also because I have waited a long time for Captain America and Iron Man to be on the silver screen together. DO NOT DISAPPOINT ME, LIFE.

2) Spiderman: I didn't really like the Tobey Maguire Spiderman series, if I'm honest. I only saw the first one and found it boring. BUT, I love everything Andrew Garfield is and chooses to be and I am pretty desperate for this to be a success for him. *fingers crossed*

3) The Dark Knight Rises: I am not really very excited about this one at all. I'll see it, yes, but I didn't really like the first two movies very much, although they were perfectly entertaining. When I reflect upon them I realise I only liked the interactions between Christian Bale and Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman. That's only about 6 lines in two whole movies - the rest I found unmemorable. Also, when I find myself anticipating it, I have to remind myself that the fact that JGL and Tom Hardy are in the same movie really does not equate to more canon Arthur/Eames.

4) The Hobbit: I'm sorry, I'm sorry for the sacriledge, but I didn't really enjoy the book, and I am in no way titillated by the trailers I've seen so far. The danger of this being a disappointing rehash of LoTR is pretty high, I think, despite my love of Martin Freeman. And have I ever mentioned how annoying I find Ian McKellan's Gandalf voice? No? Well I do. I love him in general (<3 Magneto), but it grinds horribly on my nerves. Again, I'll watch it, but I'm not sanguine.

And then on to 2013 where there is more Star Trek to be had. \o/

I really enjoyed the 2009 movie - close enough to canon in spirit and character for me to be satisfied, but new and modern enough not to feel old-fashioned or like a rip-off. Good job! I shake my head at all the Kirk/Bones it prompted, as a dyed-in-the-wool K/S-er, but the relationship bewteen them was so cute in the movie, I understand. I'm not going to go into a ship manifesto about K/S right now, but nothing trumps nearly 50 YEARS of death-defeating, alt-universe crossing, galactically destined K/S. Just sayin'.

But, I have a problem (not K/S focused) about recent spoilers I've heard casting spoilers. )

Geek-chic still lives (long and prospers)!

AO3 meme

So, this is my top 10 fic on AO3 in hit order.

1) The Mechanical Heart. 4,000 words. PG. Holmes/Watson gen. They discover the Victorian Age was one of great danger as well as great advancement.

2) Bertram and Bunnies. Jeeves and Wooster 1,700 words, PG13, Slash. There's something loose in Bertie's bedroom...

3) Crumpled: The Social Network, Eduardo/Mark, NC17, 1,300 words, for this prompt at the the [livejournal.com profile] tsn_kinkmeme, warnings for PWP, D/s, underwear kink, orgasm control. Porn, is what I'm saying here. Maybe slightly disturbing porn - Eduardo keeps himself useful while he waits for Mark to finish coding...

4) Touching Times : Arthur/Merlin, NC17, 3,500 words, warning for spanking and toys, for the prompt 'skin hunger' at [livejournal.com profile] kinkme_merlin - He couldn’t remember the last time his father had touched him.

5) Off the Script: Completed 3 part, J2, NC17, 22,000 words – Jensen and Jared are porn stars! Warnings for vague hinted reference to past abuse, spanking, cross-dressing and schmoop. [livejournal.com profile] spn_j2_bigbang 2007 entry.

6) In Retrospect (I'd rather have been a poet): Completed 4 parts, J2, NC17, 23,000 words – Jensen and Jared are secret agents! Warning - non-explicit reference to past abuse and non-con. [livejournal.com profile] spn_j2_bigbang 2009 entry.

7) One Day. James Bond, Bond/boy!Moneypenny, slash, PG, 500 words. John Moneypenny works for M. So does James Bond

8) Chuck Norris and John McClane Walk into a Bar. Die Hard 4, Gen, PG, 1,400 words. ... the bar immediately exploded. Just to save waiting for the inevitable.

9) Maybe Baby: Clex, PG13, 10,000 words, Lex reverts to childhood.

10) Palm to Palm: Arthur/Merlin, PG13, 5,700 for [livejournal.com profile] amythystluna for the [livejournal.com profile] hs_merlin challenge, In which Merlin writes his own obscure indie shit, thank you very much. Merlin's lyrics probably aren't as good as Shakespeare's verses, but then Arthur's no Romeo.

It tells me:

-that my first attempt at Yuletide was very successful, as 1, 2 and 7 were the yuletide fics that year, and the first things I put on AO3. Subsequent attempts at yuletide got barely any hits at all :( (Even though one of them, about Myron and Win, is one of my favourite things I've ever written).

-I'm too not surprised to see Off the Script creeping up to 5 because it was by far the most popular fic I ever wrote. It's only as low as 5 on here because I put in on AO3 with absolutely no announcements anywhere, and it wouldn't even have been on the AO3 recent works list under SPN because as I imported it in it has the same date (2007) so people would just have been trickling in to read it.

-My biggest surprise was Maybe Baby in at number 9. A very old fic in a very old fandom. I think someone must have rec'd it recently, though, because I've had quite a few kudo on it recently, which makes me happy.

- My favourite? None of these! It's 'Popularity', which I wrote about 8 years ago - F/K in DueSouth fandom. A paltry 142 hits D: Again, no fic announcement when I put it on there, but still! Of these? Probably Palm to Palm.

Show me yours?

It took reading an article on where 21 Jump Street stars are now to realise where I'd seen Rufus before.

Mr X. Seriously. How did I not know that? *headdesk*

ALSO, on the topic of SPN. Have you guys all seen [personal profile] wendy's cool offer to encourage SPN fandom over here?

You could get something touched (and signed) by the Js! \o/

I am sad that there is no Suits in FMM D:

For the first time since I started watching Supernatural and saw Dean Winchester, I'm watching a show where every episode I'm suddenly struck by the thought at least three times: 'Good God, that's a good looking man.'

Photobucket

Also, for the first time since then, there's a new number one on my celebrity shag list. Helllllllloooo Andrew Garfield. Sry, Jay-red. I do still love you and your sparkly balloons, though. <3 You're number two! \o?

And where is Stargate? DDD: Do not let Universe obliterate the awesomeness of SG1 and SGA!

First TV show I had self-insertion fantasies about:
I did it more in books in my youth; my mother had strict control over what I watched, and there was only one TV in the house until I was about, IDK, 11?, but for tv probably The Professionals.

First fandom in which I interacted (online and in person) with other fans:
X-Files, The Persuaders onegroup list 1996*cough cough*

Pairing in the first slash fanfiction I read:
Methos/Kronos

First RPS/RPF I read:
I'm not 100% sure, but it would have been in LoTRIPS. Orlando Bloom and probably Eric Bana, maybe Sean Bean.

First fanfiction I read that made me think, 'YES, this is exactly the kind of fanfiction I'd like to write...':
Maygra in Highlander

Pairing in the first fanfiction I wrote:
Duncan/Methos. Still a special place in my heart. <3

First OTP:
Funnily enough, given the rabid OTP-er I would become, in my first two fandoms (which hit me more-or-less simultaneously with the discovery of the interweb) I had two ships I enjoyed: Methos/Kronos and Duncan/Methos, and Mulder/Krycek and Mulder/Skinner. (This was before fandom became all about the portmanteau. There was no Mycek or Minner. Or Monos! ;)

My first OTP, I guess, where them in any other pairing made me froth a little at the mouth, would actually probably be Clex. I genuinely had to stop watching Smallville because the canon Lex/Lana made me feel slightly nauseous.

From then on I became fanatical OTP-er all the way in whatever fandom I came across. Destiel still makes me die a little inside ;)

Go here for the Social Network Fic of your dreams.

Eduardo's face was just meant to be framed by fluffy bunny ears, don't you think?

The Stop Online Priracy Act (SOPA) looks on course to pass later this month. The implications are pretty serious for internet users. The following quote shows who will be vulnerable to SOPA:

Although the House is supposed to be the mid-winter recess, representatives like House Judiciary Chairman Lamar Smith (R-Texas) continue acting as lobbyists on behalf of SOPA's financers rather than acting on our behalf as elected representatives. Please help thwart the undue influence of media businesses who are trying to circumvent the will of the average American via SOPA. Fight SOPA and tell Congress they need a more effective, less destructive law to handle online piracy.

SOPA can and will effect fanworks and the sites that post and host them. People you know, art you admire, writing you've done, websites like AO3, YouTube, LiveJournal, Dreamwidth, InsaneJournal, Photobucket, Image Shack, Google, deviantArt, Vimeo, reddit- basically any website with user submitted content WILL be affected.

Websites without user submitted content (i.e. hulu, netflix, etc.) will be unaffected.

This means that the wild, adorable, terrifying, romantic, otherworldly, realistic, deeply personal, glamorous, infuriating, magical, poetic perspectives that we take on canon will be vulnerable to blocking and blacklisting, lawsuits and censorship.

I don't know about anyone else but I would sure miss you guys and your wonderful imaginations, talent and heart.

[livejournal.com profile] nrrrdy_grrrl has collected a lot of information on her journal. I strongly suggest you go over to her journal and take a look. Our internet world could be very seriously changed. And not for the better...

1) Yuletide:

I did [livejournal.com profile] yuletide again this year. Sadly, it was not the universally positive experience it had been in previous years as my recipient has not responded to my fic which, as you can imagine, makes me feel pretty awful. However, I wrote two pinch-hits, which the recipients were very kind about, so I probably will still do it next year. Particularly as I got such an awesome Toy Soldiers fic as my gift. \o/

The fics are the top three here at my AO3. They are:
1) Harlan Coben's Myron Bolitar novels, gen, 2.2k, PG13, casefic;
2) Holy Flying Circus (Monty Python RPF), sort of John/Michael, PG13, 1.2k, mostly dialogue; and
3) Wolverine: Origins, Logan/Remy/Victor, NC17, 2.2k, mostly porn.

For serious, though, if you haven't seen Holy Flying Circus, about the debate on a chat show on Monty Python's Life of Brian when it was released, it was an awesome show. A one-off at about 1.5 hours long, and one of my TV highlights for 2011. You can download it from the link at my recipient's DYW letter here if you like. Well worth it, I assure you.

Major thanks to [livejournal.com profile] tehomet, [livejournal.com profile] montmorency and [livejournal.com profile] gestaltrose for various stepping into last-minute beta breeches. <3333

2) New Year Resolutions.

a) To update my DW/LJ once a week.
b) To loose 30 pounds.
c) To do some training at work and not rest on my laurels.
d) To write 1,000 per week. Not 52,000 words per year (although I would obviously take that!), but get some words out every week. Wish me luck!

So far, only a) is going well ;)

Here's hoping 2012 brings you only good things.

Also:

1) I rec'd The Social Network over December at the [livejournal.com profile] crack_van: 31 Mark/Edaurdo recs here

2) On that topic I have signed up for the tsn-a-thon at tumblr. Go Team Saverin! ;)
jasmasson: (yuletide)
In the past I'm SURE my timezone has worked for me on yuletide and I've been able to dash on while my transatlantic chums have been asleep before Christmas dinner to check out my gift and even a few more. Not today, alas, as the archive wasn't up until half an hour before we sat down to Christmas dinner BUT it was so worth the wait!

A beautiful Toy Soldiers Billy and Joey fic for me! \o/ In actual fact, Toy Soldiers was the reason I started doing yuletide three years ago, because I was looking for TS fic and could only find it on the yuletide archive. And now I have a TS fic of my own to hug and squeeze and call JoeyGeorge! ♥_♥

More recs later, because I only quickly nipped on to read my gift. Hope you guys are having an happy holidays! <3
