Then throughout the long, happy summer, as they move around tackling a series of minor hunts together, John's absences grow longer. Sam and Dean explore their relationship as it burgeons into something they've both been craving and which neither of them regrets.

It is rather embarrassing how much I love this fic. Every time I read this (and I’ve read it many, many times) I have to stop myself writing another gushing comment. Beautifully written and (I think) written with remarkable historical deftness.

Thanks so much for the rec, which only encourages me to finish the other story I've got going. I only began to truly like John without background irritation in Die Hard 4. Something about how he interacts with Matt makes his humor sardonic but not pissy, and there's a kind of affection in the way they interact.
