Wanted: One fandom. Well-used...

I need a new fandom to make me happy. I’ve got JoBros but the problem is that SPN has completely spoiled me, because it was such a huge fandom, with new fuel for the fire weekly for most of the year. There was always something to keep me going, but JoBros is so small and I was too late t be a member of CUF, so I don’t get a lot of delicious JoBros goodness delivered to my flist. :(

How’s fandom life for you? What shall I go into to supplement my JoBros love? Fandom specifications, 1) A strong, interesting relationship with slashy subtext (that’s just the way I roll) 2) I like a little angst, but not unrelenting – just enough for a good level of intensity 3) I must find at least one of the ‘ship characters very, VERY attractive.

Candidates for me right now (and why I’m not in really in them yet) are – Leverage (perhaps not intense enough for me?), Merlin (see Leverage), NCIS ( I’m not really very attracted to any of them), White Collar (see NCIS – I KNOW! He’s so PRETTY! I dun understand why my hormones are not cooperating!!), Criminal Minds (too ensemble based – none of the real relationship focus that I need), Sherlock Holmes (I need more fuel than a one-off film).

SPN has totally spoiled me *pouts*! What I really need is to just go back to 2006! Then I could be squeeing to my heart’s content! ;)

Help me, Flist! What should I get into?

I'd suggest Criminal Minds, but they don't have much in the way of quality fanfiction, which is sad.

I <333 White Collar and the fandom seems to be pretty cool, but I can't read fic with JUST Peter/Neal because, y'know, Peter's married and infidelity squicks me so so bad. So I just wait till some good Peter/Neal/Elizabeth gets rec'd.

Same deal with Leverage...there's some good fic out there, but I don't read anything involving sex w/ Nate because he reminds me of my father and that's just. Icky. I prefer mixtures of Eliot/Parker/Hardison. :)

Merlin and Sherlock Holmes are amazing. I still haven't completely caught up with Merlin's bigbang fics and [livejournal.com profile] candle_beck and [livejournal.com profile] paperclipbitch are the only people who's Sherlock Holmes fic I've read so far, but they are AWESOME. <3

I hope I've helped? ♥

[identity profile] jasmasson.livejournal.com 2010-04-12 06:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Ohh, I know candle_beck's stuff! I'm gonna give her Merlin a go!

Definitely no Nate!sex! Icky. But I could go for some of that OT3, fersure! ;)

As always my first priority would be LotR RPS, not that this is any news :). But that fandom too has been really slow over the last two years and really the quality of the fic doesn't necessarily get better ;).

I'm reading a lot of Merlin and there is lots of easy going feel good fic (and crack) that I find awesome. In case you'd like to try something out, I'd strongyl suggest starting with this one :)

[identity profile] jasmasson.livejournal.com 2010-04-12 06:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks for the rec. Merlin is very cute indeed!

It's always annoying when a favoured fandom slows, isn't it? But Bradley James is delightful. So. There's that. ;)

[identity profile] setissma.livejournal.com 2010-04-11 05:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I still love SPN, because, well, it's my fandom home. I'm not a huge fan of this apocalypse storyline, largely because I would really just prefer Sam and Dean MAN UP and put their respective shit on the table instead of sulking for another season, but hey. Men are idiots occasionally.

That said, I've been adding to my fandom stuff a little lately, because... well... writing the same four characters for three years got a little boring. I've been dabbling in AI, largely because I find Adam Lambert an interesting character to try to write effectively, and because I think the Kris/Adam relationship is deliciously interesting - what can I say, I'm a sucker for best friend pairings - but I feel like White Collar and I might have something in common because, um, Neal Caffrey is kind of the best thing since sliced bread. Just saying.

[identity profile] jasmasson.livejournal.com 2010-04-12 07:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I still love SPN... I just want it to be four years ago. *g*

Adam Lambert is terribly adorable and so is Kris... but I completely missed AI, not being 'A'merican! Neal Caffrey is adorable, though. I really think I'm not quite there in that fandom because Peter's married. But his wife is gorgeous... so maybe I can work with that! ;)

[identity profile] setissma.livejournal.com 2010-04-12 07:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I will fully admit to not having watched a single second of AI; I can't handle the show itself, largely because the judges drive me crazy. But they do tons of joint interviews, etc. and you can get just about all the good bits on youtube. It's totally possible to be in AI fandom without watching AI; tons of people do it! :)

Also, I think WC is the first fandom I've found where the primary pairing seems to be a threesome; Peter/Neal/Elizabeth is happy OT3 land! :D

[identity profile] junalele.livejournal.com 2010-04-11 05:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Supernatural really strictly only because of the quality of fandom. I'm not even watching the show as such anymore, I don't really wanna witness them fuckign it all up. But yes. Also Jared and Jensen? think of the rps, woman!

Sherlock Holmes. I may have ticked that little box because I'm reading the original stories right now and seriously. The slashibility.

Finally. The Wire. It's only the best show that ever graced the screens of the tv and woefully there is so little fanfic and what there is - sucks. Why? Brilliant, complex characters with lots of slashibility. So okay. This one is mostly me craving finally awesome The Wire fic.

[identity profile] jasmasson.livejournal.com 2010-04-12 07:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey you!

In enjoy Sherlock Holmes, myself. Original and New. I've not seen the wire, but everyone say's it's great.

Switzerland looked beautiful. I've never been to that area of Europe. I'm considering a Northern cruise later this year, to Scandanavia and Iceland. I hear it's beautiful.

SAD that Rooney's injured... (and without Cristiano hugs to make him feel better!)

[identity profile] junalele.livejournal.com 2010-04-19 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey back! How are you? In general, I mean.

You have got to watch The Wire! I'm sure you'd love it. Best show to ever grace the screen. Seriously.

Careful with the vulcanos there, though! ;P

So sad. I don't know what it is with him and injuries in world cup years. Jesus. And yes, just one more reason why Cristiano should have stayed put in Manchester.

Woman, I might just have to take away my friendship from you and put you in a corner to rethink the silliness you just posted!

You were an amazing X Files author, and you would be just as amazing writing NCIS! Just look at the pretty boy in my icon and tell me he's not illegally attractive! *gasps in shock*

Didn't you once accuse me of it being my fault that you wrote an NCIS fic? I never saw that one. I think I might just have to drop by and Gibbs glare you into submission... *meaningfully raised eyebrow*

[identity profile] jasmasson.livejournal.com 2010-04-12 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Dun leave me! *g*

I know, he is AWFULLY cute (LOVE the icon) but not QUITE my type... although clearly Gibbs's ;)

I've not been happy with what the Show's been doing recently. But I DID write an NCIS... but it wasn't goos :( Still, you and Xanthe make compelling arguments!!! *g*.

[identity profile] albydarned.livejournal.com 2010-04-11 05:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I completely understand your problem. I feel as though every fandom I've entered after SPN has been a bit of a disappointment, because there's just so much less out there ... :(

But I voted for Criminal Minds, simply because I think that some of the quality of the stories has really improved recently, and I'm 110% in favor of the recent general OTP switch from Reid/Hotch to Reid/Morgan. If you're interested in finding some stories, I've got a few saved up in my memories that I think are pretty good. ;)

[identity profile] jasmasson.livejournal.com 2010-04-12 07:12 pm (UTC)(link)
SPN spoiled me for the rest of Fandom! *g*

I do REALLY enjoy CM - and I'm very attracted to both Reid and Morgan, so that's a BIG PLUS in CM's favour. I'll check out your mems. I nosed around a little a while ago and didn't really find much, so I'm grateful for the tips! Thanks!

[identity profile] huntress69.livejournal.com 2010-04-11 06:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Although my current full-time fandom is SPN, I watched a marathon of Enterprise and am 3/4 way done with a Trip/Malcolm. (And I don't care that the fandom is half-dead LOL). I happen to think that the slash is practically canon. And I have been sneaking in some Jonas Brothers reading here and there also.

[identity profile] jasmasson.livejournal.com 2010-04-12 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Jonas Brothers! You couldn't make them up (see inthenameofjuc's comment below).

And Enterrise was awesome. Maybe we can be in a fandom of two! *g*

[identity profile] cordelia-gray.livejournal.com 2010-04-13 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Trip/Malcolm FTW! It was nearly canon, bless them. And there was MPREG! But I also kind of hate myself for having watched that whole show, and I still haven't forgiven them for the ending. :(

[identity profile] huntress69.livejournal.com 2010-04-13 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
A fandom of 2 is nice. Maybe I can coax others to write it also, or at least watch the show.

Definitely recommending SGA!:)
I've been hooked since I saw the first episode and since then-SGA and SG-1 became my #1 fandoms.Fics alone are worth it and you can find absolutely anything you want there.

They do have some GREAT fics in that fandom! Astolat's 'time in a bottle' is a PERFECT fic. PERFECT.

And Jack O'Neill is my second favourite character ever on TV (after Methos). And Daniel's pretty blue eyes.... hmm, SG may well be the way to go!

You know,I'm fairly new to SG fandoms and after my other fandoms I can say that it's hard to surprise me with a great fic.BUT Stargate fics definitely managed to impressed me with their awesomeness:)

OMG,Jack-there are just no words to describe how much I love this man, lol. And Daniel is just ridiculously yummy!
*draws hearts all over both*

Hi! This just popped up in my box, so I'm going to drop in & be opinionated - hope you don't mind!

SPN fandom is still amazing, there is a vast amount of great stuff being written in it all the time. And if you're tired of the same old pairings, there are new crackier ones to be found - allow me to recommend [livejournal.com profile] sassy_otp (sam/castiel). There are unicorns and rainbows! The quality of the show itself has been really uneven of late, but when they're on, they're on , and the angst is epic. I really am kind of OTP about Sam/Dean in spite of everything, and it's interesting to see them go through hard times and try to find their way back to each other. Though I totally understand why someone might give up on it :(

Also like to put in a plug for Sherlock Holmes. Probably worth it just for [livejournal.com profile] candle_beck's stories alone, but check out the activity on the Holmes [livejournal.com profile] sherlockkink. And while there is only the movie currently, there are years worth of TV shows, older movies, and of course the books themselves. People have been writing Holmes fic for decades, so the fandom goes deep even if it's not as broad. Here (http://liquidfic.net/Holmes_Watson.html) is a great round-up of links to older fics. I particularly recommend [livejournal.com profile] katieforsythe's - if at least one of her stories doesn't make you cry, then your tear ducts are probably defective!

Merlin's fun, and the fandom seems very active, but I find the show itself just a little too silly to really get into. Leverage is great, but I agree about the lack of intensity, and while Eliot/Parker/Hardison is fun, there's not a lot of angst potential. And Nate, as mentioned, is just too Dad-like to be really shippable for me.

Have you looked into The Vampire Diaries? I actually don't know much about the fandom, but the show is surprisingly good. It's super-soapy and kind of ridiculous in that special CW way, but appearances to the contrary, it is not actually "Twilight the Series". Yes, it features a high-school girl in love with a vampire, but she's not an idiot or a doormat. And there's a strong case that the primary relationship on the show is actually that between the (scorchingly hot!) vampire brothers. They have an incredibly strong love/hate bond, more than a hundred years of angst, a history of being in love with the same woman, and they frequently kill people for each other. Oh, and they have a distinct lack of personal space, as demonstrated in this (possibly spoilery) picspam (http://community.livejournal.com/salvatoreslash/1714.html#cutid1/). What more could you possibly want?!

I will go away and stop babbling long-windedly now.

[identity profile] jasmasson.livejournal.com 2010-04-12 07:21 pm (UTC)(link)
YAY! Give me your opinions *chin hands*

Sherlock Holmes is delightful - I'll definitely check out your recs, THANKS.

You know, I do fancy The Vampire Diaries, but I missed that start... looking at your picspam I think I might have to check it out. Yes indeed. *g*

[identity profile] cordelia-gray.livejournal.com 2010-04-13 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
That picspam is remarkably compelling, isn't it? *Goes to study it again* Yep, definitely slashy!

[identity profile] havenward.livejournal.com 2010-04-11 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
My problem is this - you're looking for one great big fandom. But right now, sprawling fandoms that are still made of awesome are hard to find, imo. So you should totally fill in the space with a handful of smaller fandoms which are well written, well acted, and have fandoms that still remember how to act like human beings. Especially since there's crossover potential between all and any of them, and also with SPN if you're so inclined.

Leverage. White Collar. Justified. (And to lesser extents, Burn Notice and Castle.)

All smart tv, all with conmen/thieves/and the feds who hate them. Justified especially would crossover very, very well with SPN, and it's only 4 eps in so far (it airs on Tuesdays).

:smishes:

[identity profile] jasmasson.livejournal.com 2010-04-12 07:23 pm (UTC)(link)
You're so right, lovely, it would be much better to spread out fandoms, so as not to be completely dependent on one (and then bereft when it screws you over ;)

Leverage is SO SWEET - I enjoy them a lot. The OT3 is delicious!

*smooches*

[identity profile] havenward.livejournal.com 2010-04-12 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Leverage's OT3 makes me happy in my secret geeky/angry place, it really does. :D

[identity profile] iamtheenemy.livejournal.com 2010-04-12 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Look, ok, I don't know if you've thought about Generation Kill, but it is AMAZING, ok? It is the fictionalized retelling of the true story of a battalion of Recon Marines who were the first boots on the ground in the Iraq War. The camaraderie between all the men, but especially Team One Alpha and their Lieutenant are hilarious and vulgar and totally un-edited. These men talk like soldiers. They're assholes a lot of the time, but they're also brave and scared and bad ass. There's some angst, but the battalion was successful in bringing home all of their men, so there's nothing too horrible. Sometimes war stories are too much for me. Too dark and depressing. This one has a lot of personality and a lot of funny bits to keep it interesting and soften the angst. The men entertain each other by singing or making up songs. Team One Alpha's rendition of Teenage Dirtbag I found particularly adorable.

The show was a mini-series that aired over seven episodes on HBO. The main pairing is Sergeant Brad Colbert, Team One Alpha's leader, and Lieutenant Nathaniel Fick, Brad's immediate superior (who happens to be two years younger than him).

Here is Brad:

Image

And Nate:

Image

There's a bunch of awesome fic. Lots of stuff that uses canon, lots of post-canon, AU, fantasy. If you want some links, let me know! The mini-series was based off a book with the same name that was written by Evan Wright, a Rolling Stone writer who embedded with Brad's team for the first forty days of the war and saw firsthand the hardships of the war and the interpersonal issues between the men. Plus, Nate himself wrote a book from HIS perspective, which is another neat resource. Umm...oh, ok. Here are some clips.

Here's (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r3o-A8MBiw4) one of Nate talking to the Reporter, and then Nate and Brad talking about a situation that occurred earlier in the episode. Here's (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4RLlwuSJGUQ) a clip of Corporal Ray Person, a member of Brad's team and the main source of comic relief in the series, commenting on the battalion's supply truck being stolen. Finally, here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nAp1iOTcqGY&feature=related) is a montage of some of the many music scenes in the series.

i do feel a trifle awful as i haven't really been (read: not one bit) participating in stupernatural; i haven't even seen many episodes this season =/ but i do love my show still. i get to live vicariously through everyone else on my flist until the dvd comes out and i can veg out for about two days

hockey has eaten my brain for the past few months; i blame that *facepalm* well, i blame my team actually...lovable failboats, the whole lot of them

Nobody has suggested HP? Sorry, that was my start, and I continue to find gems. Even though I now read SPN and others, I will always go back to HP. My favorite site to find fics is www.hpfandom.net There are always new stories being posted.

Hey, you! Just had to add my two cents here. :) SPN is still my go-to show, but Justified on FX is my new obsession. Watch it just once; Timothy Olyphant is - er- very pretty. And sexy. And a total badass. And there are a few characters you could slash him with if you wanted (in my fantasies he's all mine, so I can't help you there, LOL). :)

PS: It's on three times tonight
