Look, ok, I don't know if you've thought about Generation Kill, but it is AMAZING, ok? It is the fictionalized retelling of the true story of a battalion of Recon Marines who were the first boots on the ground in the Iraq War. The camaraderie between all the men, but especially Team One Alpha and their Lieutenant are hilarious and vulgar and totally un-edited. These men talk like soldiers. They're assholes a lot of the time, but they're also brave and scared and bad ass. There's some angst, but the battalion was successful in bringing home all of their men, so there's nothing too horrible. Sometimes war stories are too much for me. Too dark and depressing. This one has a lot of personality and a lot of funny bits to keep it interesting and soften the angst. The men entertain each other by singing or making up songs. Team One Alpha's rendition of Teenage Dirtbag I found particularly adorable.

The show was a mini-series that aired over seven episodes on HBO. The main pairing is Sergeant Brad Colbert, Team One Alpha's leader, and Lieutenant Nathaniel Fick, Brad's immediate superior (who happens to be two years younger than him).

There's a bunch of awesome fic. Lots of stuff that uses canon, lots of post-canon, AU, fantasy. If you want some links, let me know! The mini-series was based off a book with the same name that was written by Evan Wright, a Rolling Stone writer who embedded with Brad's team for the first forty days of the war and saw firsthand the hardships of the war and the interpersonal issues between the men. Plus, Nate himself wrote a book from HIS perspective, which is another neat resource. Umm...oh, ok. Here are some clips.

Here's (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r3o-A8MBiw4) one of Nate talking to the Reporter, and then Nate and Brad talking about a situation that occurred earlier in the episode. Here's (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4RLlwuSJGUQ) a clip of Corporal Ray Person, a member of Brad's team and the main source of comic relief in the series, commenting on the battalion's supply truck being stolen. Finally, here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nAp1iOTcqGY&feature=related) is a montage of some of the many music scenes in the series.
