due South: Ghost Song by exeterlinden

Fandom: due South
Characters/Pairings: Benton Fraser/Ray Kowalski, Diefenbaker, Victoria
Rating: author's rating is ?NC-17 for angst and violent imagery. I'd rate it Mature.
Length: 9998
Content Notes: see rating note above. No AO3 warnings apply.
Creator Links: exeterlinden on AO3, exeterlinden on DW
Themes: Mystery and Suspense, Mythical Creatures: werewolves, Angst with a happy ending, Friends to lovers, AU: fork in the road

Summary: It appears on the fire escape one late evening in early winter, big and dark and silent.

Reccer's Notes: This gripping and spooky story starts with a different version of Fraser's chase and snowy huddling with Victoria, then segues into current (AU) canon with Ray Kowalski baffled by the big, black, mysterious, wolflike dog that intermittently appears on his fire escape, trying to get in, sometimes with Dief trying to chivvy it away. Also, Fraser's been distancing himself, and when he finds out about the dog's visits he's most unhappy. Things get weirder, and Fraser gets weirder, and then Victoria returns to push them all into crisis. The ending took me by surprise, and I liked it a lot! An excellent read.

Pinch Hitter Prompts 2025

Every year, well over a hundred pinch hitters take on extra assignments. Many of these pinch hitters are signed up to Yuletide, with an assigned writer and recipient from the start. Some are not!

Though these supporting pinch hitters are not guaranteed a gift, we'd like to make it a possibility. On this post, we're collecting prompts from the pinch hitters who are not signed up to Yuletide, so that others may give them treats.

To writers
Please consider writing a treat for a pinch hitter! See instructions for how, where, and when to post a treat. Full-length gifts for pinch hitters are welcome in the Main collection.

To pinch hitters
If you are signed up to Yuletide this year, this post does not apply to you, but we still hope you enjoy your gift(s).

If you are not signed up to Yuletide this year but you have claimed or posted a pinch hit, please comment to this post with your requests! Please limit yourself to Yuletide-eligible fandoms, but you can ask for more than 8 different fandoms.

Yuletide 2025 tag set on AO3
Tag set as a browser app

You can treat your comment as a Dear Writer letter, with likes and prompts, or include a link to a letter. Either way, please include the following information when you comment:

-your AO3 name
-your requested fandoms [please format the fandoms exactly as they are in the tag set if possible]
-your requested characters

and, optionally, ideas for what you would like to receive, DNWs, and/or (a) link(s) to other places where you have written about what you would like. You're welcome to comment on mini-challenge posts!

Thank you, pinch hitters! And thank you to anyone on the lookout to pick up a pinch hit - we will post them at [community profile] yuletide_pinch_hits throughout the exchange.

Yuletide 2025 Beta Readers

It is time once again to organize beta readers for Yuletide! Beta readers can check your fic for style, language issues, canon compliance, specialized knowledge of various kinds, and making sure the whole thing makes sense. Being a beta reader yourself is a fun way to contribute to Yuletide--even if you're not writing a story!

If you're interested in beta reading somebody else's story, fill out the form HERE It will ask about what fandoms you are willing to beta for, as well as other kinds of expertise you're willing to offer. Note that you will need to enter an email address, which will be visible to other users, but we will hide this information after Yuletide 2025 is over. After you've filled out the form, you'll get an email containing your responses and a link you can use to edit your answers.

If you need a beta, check the spreadsheet HERE. All responses will be visible in the tab "Form Responses." We’ll be copy-pasting information from there into the other tabs as we’re able to make them easier to find. Find someone offering the kind of help you need (make sure it's not your recipient!) and contact them directly. If no one is offering what you need, you can also comment anonymously on this post to see if someone can help, or you can sign onto the Yuletide Discord and contact a hippo.

If you’re asking for a beta, it can often be helpful to be clear about what types of feedback would be helpful to you. Examples could be that you’re looking for thoughts on characterization and story structure; or you'd particularly like feedback on whether your story successfully avoids topics your recipient doesn't want; or maybe you specify that you would like a check of spelling, punctuation, and grammar (SPAG) but are specifically not interested in feedback on wording choices.

It’s also courteous to ask your beta reader if they would like to be credited when you post your fic, and if so, how. Some people appreciate public thanks in an author’s note, while others may prefer not to be named.

If you have any questions, comment on this post or email the mods at yuletideadmin@gmail.com. (The beta post is an unofficial aspect of Yuletide. Mods had time to put it up this year, but we don’t mean to take it over, so we hope a non-mod participant can put it up in 2026.)

Whether you're volunteering as a beta, or considering future coordination, we appreciate you a lot! Thank you for helping out.

Also please feel free to share any tips you may have about what makes a good beta experience (either as a beta or when seeking a beta's help).

Pumpkin Pie on the Horizon!

In Idol news, we wrote stories this week that used another contestant's last two entries as inspiration. My story is here, and I could use all the readers and voters I can get. It's a head-to-head competition where only one winner will emerge from each pair. Ulp!

For those who have been wondering, our son passed the California Bar Exam last week! We were almost positive he would, but knowing for sure is a huge relief for everyone. We celebrated by going to a local Czech/Italian (yes, really) restaurant and eating their incredible chicken paprikash and lava cake. \o/

TV-wise, I finished watching Scott And Bailey on BritBox (really enjoyed the whole series). And sadly, I also finished S2 of Netflix's Wednesday. I could look at the sets and costumes for that show for years and never be tired of it. I need more! Now I'm trying out Orphan Black for my garage-biking needs. Let's hope it's fast-paced enough.

And finally, I promised [personal profile] kizzy that I would share my pumpkin pie recipe. This is basically Libby's recipe, but with much better spicing.

~*~

Better Pumpkin Pie

1 can (15 oz.) Libby’s 100% Pure Pumpkin
1½ cups (1 can or 12 fl. oz.) Evaporated Milk (regular, not sweetened)
3/4 cup granulated sugar (150 g.)
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
2 large eggs
1 unbaked 9-inch (4 cup volume) deep-dish pie shell

1. Preheat oven to 425º.
2. Mix dry ingredients in a small bowl. Beat eggs in a large bowl. In the large bowl, stir in pumpkin and the dry ingredient mixture. Gradually stir in evaporated milk.
3. Pour into pie shell.
4. Bake in preheated oven for 15 minutes. Reduce temperature to 350º. Bake for 40-60 minutes or until knife inserted near center comes out clean. Note: bake until the internal temperature hits 175 degrees (use an instant-read thermometer). Be sure that the center of the pumpkin pie jiggles slightly; it will set up as it cools.
5. Cool on wire rack for 2 hours.

Neil Robertson meeting

So, I'm in Leicester for the Champion Of Champions.

...and Mark is in the semifinal, playing Neil Robertson later today for a place in the final.

This story is from Thursday night, though.

I genuinely had the wildest, most amazing moment with Neil on Thursday night. We had a storm and heavy rainfall in Leicester, so I decided to get a taxi back to the hotel. That took a while to arrive, so the security people let me wait inside at the arena. Meaning I was one of the last to leave.

So, Neil comes out from the players' area, having beaten John Higgins earlier in the evening. And he goes right over to me and gives me a kind of hug (not a full on hug, but something kinda like a hug?), and asks if I wanted a photo. His exact words? "Come on, let's make Rob jealous."

(For info: Rob is a guy who comes to a lot of tournaments. He's a massive Neil fan. And I was with him once when I met Neil in Cheltenham six weeks back, meaning he knows that we know each other - I'm absolutely stunned that he'd remember that, though!)

So, we take the pic - which comes out great, btw - and I tell Neil (with a little laugh) that he scares me ahead of the semifinal when he plays this well. I also congratulated him on the win vs John, of course.

And... he tells me to just enjoy the semifinal, to have fun watching. He's completely calm about it, and I feel like he's basically saying between the lines that neither he nor Mark are stressing about it, so I shouldn't, either.

Just: what a moment! Not something I'd ever thought I'd experience!

(Narumi... maaaayyyyy use this as an excuse to take him to various collab cafés and get more of the collectable goods, but hey! They're still technically cafés, right?) Oh, and also, Naoya is planning on proposing to Kou after beating her at a video game, despite being the worst gamer ever. Which means Narumi needs to find a way to help him out. Becoming Multitudes

Head to Head: Use another author's two entries from last week as a springboard. Mine were [personal profile] drippedonpaper's Ambuscade and A Nail Driven Out By Another Nail.

x-x-x-x-x

I was five years old the first time I changed.

One minute, I was looking at a bluebird and wondering what it would be like to fly. Suddenly, the grass was up to my chest and the rest of the world seemed far away.

I was so startled that I changed right back again.

I wasn't sure it had actually happened. How was it even possible? I decided that I must have imagined it. I kept on believing that until six months later, when it happened all over again.

It was such an innocent thought: do puppies know their tails are wagging? And then I was nose to nose with our puppy, a happy little brown dachshund who'd never met another dog she didn't like. We chased each other around the yard for a long time, running circles in the grass and racing in and out of the flowerbeds. When I stopped to catch my breath, I remembered who I was and just like that, I was Annie again. Coco jumped back and yipped, but was just as happy to see the Annie version of me as puppy me.

After that, I started to wonder if changing was something everyone could do.

"Mommy, do you ever change into other things?" I asked her.

"Like what?" she said.

"Like a bird, or a doggy?"

She just laughed and hugged me. "What an imagination you have!"

I guessed that meant No.

I asked my friend Sophie whether she had ever been something else. "A cat once, maybe?" she said. "In a dream?"

As I got older, I learned to stop asking. Nobody else could do what I did. That either made me special or weird. Maybe both.

Mid-November already!

October flew by. There was my birthday, and that was it. We missed Halloween (4th year running) because we had an out-of-town wedding to go to, and flew out on that Friday. The wedding was fantastic, but it was strange to miss out on little kids in costumes. We saw a few dressed-up adults during our travels, but no little kids!

There was lots of visiting with family, and in between events I wrote one of my two Idol entries in the hotel on my tiny laptop. Not the best environment, and it resulted in a very choppy first draft that needed heavy revision on the day the stories were due! To top that off, there was no poll, so hardly anybody read them. :( If you're interested, they were Story 1 and Story 2, both seasonal. :D

And possibly even weirder than missing Halloween was switching back to Standard Time on that Sunday. You don't really feel that extra hour when you're traveling (except for the confusion it causes). At home, though, I like to really enjoy having another hour to get stuff done! That feeling gets negated a bit when darkness comes crashing down even earlier, but it's nice while it lasts.

I really notice the aftermath of the time shift when I'm bicycling. I find it hard to get out as soon as I'd like, so now I'm stuck biking into the sun at the end of the ride. It's blinding. Thank goodness I've been saved by late-day clouds this week. But overall, the problem will only get worse.

Thanksgiving is coming up, and we're wondering if our daughter will be able to make it home? That wasn't in doubt until Trump's screw-ups with air-traffic controllers, but it's a new snafu every day with that man. She did make it home for my birthday for about 1 1/2 days, which was great! We never see as much of her as we'd like.

Got any big plans for the holidays? It'll just be the (I hope) four of us, as usual. Though we now have a Weber grill again after 4 years, so we should be able to have barbecued turkey on the big day!

Establishing a Writing Routine

Welcome to everyone joining us for the Year-End Marathon and to everyone looking for a peek behind the curtain at GYWO. Each month volunteers post discussions about writing craft, life, and publishing. This rare public post is to give a taste of the full GYWO experience. We welcome you to interact, comment, and share your own experiences on the topic.

Establishing a Writing Routine

The idealized writing routine looks something like this:
  • make a cup of tea or coffee while getting in a creative mindset
  • sit down to free write with a fountain pen as a warmup
  • light a candle or incense to draw the muse and other creative spirits
  • put on the perfect music or silence, as needed
  • get comfortable and write 1,000 or 2,000 words in an hour or so

Mmm, sounds nice, doesn't it? That aesthetic set up is absolutely the ideal. It feels more writerly and like it’s what’s missing from our writing lives. If only we could free write with a fountain pen, light a candle, and be blessed by the muse with inspiration to write for an hour. If that, then we could be successful and productive writers.

But writing routines are not that idealized or consistent. Writing routines have to fit around real lives and incorporate personal quirks. Writing routines are not one-size-fits-all and they must be flexible so you can write on days when you’re busy, tired, or just not feeling it.

Writing routines won’t make you write, but they can help you find your way to words.

What Does a Real Writing Routine Look Like?

Probably the best way to figure out what writing routines look like is by examining an actual routine that works for someone. So, mine, heh. Let's talk about my writing routine on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, the days when I write with a fairly steady schedule.

Three days a week, I meet with 2–3 members of my in-person writing group on Discord for a mid-day write-in.

Prep Time: My writing prep starts about an hour before when I eat lunch, take a break, and let my mind rest and switch tasks. I usually watch a TV show and play a phone game. I make sure to choose a show that won’t adversely affect my writing, specifically by making me want to watch the next episode, flail about it with a friend, or otherwise pull my thoughts away from writing.

I then check-in with the other writers who join me. This is when we confirm attendance or delays to our normal start time. Then I clean up from lunch, make tea, and open my files.

Hopefully I also have time to clean up my file from the previous writing session and get a grip on what I need to work on today, which usually includes rereading the last couple paragraphs in a scene or notes I made about what comes next. If I run out of time, I finish my prep in the first 5–10 minutes of our first sprint.

Writing: I have a desk in my home office where I write. Aside from my laptop and/or iPad (and various desk fidgets), I try to clear my desk except for my tea, phone, project notebook, and a set of colored pens. (Sometimes I clear my desk by setting things out of sight on the floor.)

I set the timer for our first sprint and get to work.

We usually write for three 20-minute sprints, giving about an hour of writing time over an hour-and-a-half period. We report what we worked on, complain about various things (including how mushy our brains are), and share pictures of our cats.

Wrap Up: By the end of the third sprint, I’m usually done writing for the day. If I’m really on a roll, I might continue long enough to finish a conversation, but if it feels like it will take longer than about 10 minutes, I jot some notes about what comes next and trust I’ll be able to pick up where I left off the next day.

At that point, writing time is done and I move on to other things I need to do with my day.

How Do You Make A Routine Happen?

The writing routine I described above happens in a group. Meeting with a group is a great way to establish a writing routine. When you make a plan to meet with others, you are more likely to show up than if you just tell yourself that you’re supposed to write at noon.

You know how I know that? Because the days of the week when I don’t write with other people, I don’t write on a schedule. I do write, but I fit it in wherever makes sense in my day, which means on a very busy day, I’m squeezing in words at the last possible second. (Not my best choice.)

Routines also happen when you take similar steps to get there. The whole “routine” part is that you have a consistent set of actions that lead you to writing. You may not need lunch + break + tea before writing, but a series of steps before writing that can become your pre-writing routine can help you get there.

You know how I know that? Most days if I follow lunch with tea, I sit down to write. My brain has associated mid-day tea with writing, so it’s become an easy way to get my brain to shift into the writing gear. (It’s also a way for me to tell my brain to shift into writing. If I want to write and have been dancing around it, if I make a cup of tea, it’s a short-cut to my brain being able to settle.)

The other Big Secret to a writing routine is figuring out what works for you. While tea and a writing group work best for me, maybe you need something different. Maybe your routine is:
  • Make Breakfast + Notebook to Freewrite
  • Take Shower + Let Hair Dry + Write 20 Minutes
  • Walk to Park + Eat Lunch + Write 15 Minutes
  • Pick Up Kids + Fix Snacks + Write While Helping with Homework
  • Everyone Else In Bed + Write Until Sleepy

Your routine can be whatever helps you get to writing, so figure out what works for you and is something you can achieve—whether that’s daily or a handful of times a week. Remember, routines can be adjusted for specific days (my MWF routine is different from other days) or you might have a routine for Busy Days that’s different from your routine for Extremely Busy Days. As long as you have your own secret to get you writing, you have a routine.

Think about what you did the last time you sat down to write, is that your writing routine? Do you think something might work better for you?

LJ Idol, Wheel of Chaos, Topic 15: Head-to-Head Match-up

Author's Note: This week we have been put in a head-to-head match with another contestant. I was challenged by [personal profile] l0lita. Our goal: to take our opponent's week 14 topics as the springboard for our entry this week, to reinterpret them into something new and original. I primarily used "Ambuscade" but with a bit of info from "A Nail is Driven Out by Another Nail" thrown into the mix as well. (I wanted to link to her topics, but they don't seem to be available any more.)

Survival

Violence has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. My kid sister and I endured some form of abuse or abject neglect every day of our young lives. Even Christmas wasn’t immune--we would often receive a toy or game that we’d asked Santa for, and we might get to enjoy it for an hour, maybe half the day if we were lucky. But then, in a drunken fit of rage or wrath, it would be destroyed before our eyes. It was often dad doing the dirty deed, but mom certainly had her moments, too. Happiness wasn't ever going to be our lot in life.

Theresa and I endured daily beatings to teach us godliness, or what mom liked to call “a valuable lesson,” or even just to “teach us our place.” Most of the time we were beaten because she and dad were drunk again, and we were “conveniently available.”

Convenient for them, that is. Not for us.

Over time, my sister and I learned to be silent, to be sneaky, to rely on our excellent hearing and our abnormally good peripheral vision. We learned how to blend into the background, to hide in plain sight, to play possum, and not to bait the bears. Once I was old enough to have a steady hand, and the strength to hold a gun, I learned how to shoot a pistol, a shotgun, and a rifle. I kept in good shape, despite often being malnourished, and could run for miles without getting winded.

If you can’t beat ‘em, outrun or outwit them. That was my outlook on life.

Our parents acted tough, but fortunately for us they weren’t very smart. Theresa and I survived our father trying to kill us in our beds. She was nine at the time, and I was eleven. We slept in the same small room, under threadbare blankets and on lumpy mattresses. Dad came in late one night, after spending all evening out at the bar drinking beer with his pals. I could smell him from the doorway long before I ever saw his tall, skinny shadow in the moonlight. He approached Theresa’s bed first--it was closer to the door--bent down, and placed his dirty hand firmly over her mouth and chin. He then used his other hand to pinch her nose shut. When she started thrashing, I realized he was suffocating her, and I knew I had to step in.

I leapt out of bed and ran at dad like a raging bull, hitting him squarely in the kidneys with the top of my head. He howled and had to let Theresa go.

“Get out of here!” I shouted, ready to attack again. “Leave us alone!”

My father turned toward me, red-faced, and pushed me away. I fell, hitting my arm on the footboard, hard enough to leave a bruise. He then bent and vomited all over the floor and my bare feet, then stood upright, a bit unsteadily. His bloodshot eyes narrowed at me as he wiped his mouth with the back of his hand. “Clean up that mess! Right now!”

I hastily removed my t-shirt, grimacing at the pain in my arm, and used it to sop up the hot mess while he watched, arms crossed. Theresa huddled on her bed, keeping silent. She knew better than to draw attention to herself.

Dad hiccupped, and swayed a little. “Now, get back to bed! And I'd better not hear a peep out of either of you!”

I tossed my sodden shirt into the trash can, and climbed into bed as dad slammed the door shut behind him, locking it from the outside.

“Are you okay?” I whispered to Theresa. She just nodded.

I laid down.

“Terry?” she whispered back after a few minutes.

“Yeah?”

“One of these days, when I’m bigger, I’m going to kill him,” she said coldly.

“Not if I do it first,” I replied earnestly. “Fathers, fiancés, or zombie hoards--whatever comes, I’ve always got your back.”

I could almost hear her smile. “Thanks, Terence. You’re a great big brother.”

We went to sleep, both hoping to just survive another day.
